Every fall, we start thinking about changing our skin care. We think about more moisture, more protection, maybe a richer cream as the air gets cooler and drier.
But here's something we don't talk about as much: Your skin isn't the only thing that needs a fall routine. Your whole self is moving into a different season. Schedules change. Daylight changes. We spend more time indoors. And before long, we're surrounded by people coughing and sneezing.
In Chinese medicine, seasonal transitions have always mattered. This is the time of year when practitioners of Chinese medicine (like our line's creator, Dr. Martha Lucas, L.Ac.) start thinking about Wei Qi—the body's protective energy—and about supporting people before they feel completely run down. Wei Qi is a traditional Chinese medicine concept, not a biomedical measure of immune function.
Support isn't only about what we put on our skin. It's also about getting enough sleep. Stress management. Rest, taking a break now and then.
And sometimes, using something with a pleasant or familiar scent can become a cue to stop, breathe and take care of yourself.
That's why two of our essential oil blends make such a nice pairing for fall: Warrior—our seasonal blend—and Om—a calming, grounding blend for those moments when life feels like it's moving a little too fast. Research has found that chronic stress can suppress some immune measures; the effects vary by type and duration of stress. That research does not show that either blend changes immune function. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health notes that rigorous research is limited for some aromatherapy uses, so these blends are here for the scent and the moment of pause—not as cold prevention or treatment.
Use them as part of a small fall ritual: breathe, slow down, take care of your skin—and remember to take care of the person inside it, too, because your fall routine should be about more than your face.
