First let's start with a public service announcement: Everyone would benefit from a trip to the dermatologist’s office at least once each year for a thorough skin exam to check for changes and areas of concern. We recommend that our patients (Dr. Lucas's patients), especially those who have chronic skin conditions, sun damage, or are at high risk for skin cancer, perform self-exams regularly. Once a month, take a good look at your skin. You’re checking for discoloration, new moles, lumps, changes in existing moles and freckles. Just note anything out of the ordinary. If you find anything that concerns you, contact your dermatologist.
Now let's move on to the basics of a good skin care routine. While your routine can be curated to match your unique skin type, there are some basics that everyone should follow.
- Clean your skin – simply rinse off the residue with warm water and a gentle cleanser.
- Toner – use a toner that will deliver active ingredients like vitamin C and antioxidants as well as shrinking pores.
- Serums & eye creams – serums and eye creams are concentrated products used to tackle fine lines and wrinkles.
- Acne treatments – apply spot treatments for acne rather than washing the whole face with acne products.
- Moisturizer and sunscreen – apply an effective moisturizer or mineral cream followed by a sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 45 or higher.
